SAGA Bowmen WIP

First WIP pics of the SAGA project.
Some highlighting is missing mostly flesh but some robes. But I think that I have managed to make them dark and musky as I planed, just to get that dark and medieval feeling I like.

So far the minies is a blast to paint, but I'm not looking forward to horses 17 of them.

Got some minies yesterday from Gripping Beast, e bunch of Normand for my SAGA projekt.

Norman Heartguard 1 or 2 pts depending on how your field the unit (Spears Not included)

A short review of the minies.

Good casting, no excessive casting flesh and good details for TT minies.
The packs contained NO miss casts and all the minies where there. A good mix of poses of minies. Fast delivery and well packed. A bit short of spears and swords but I have sent them an email, we will wait and see how they respond and how fast they fix it.
Got a respond within the hour, and apparently the spears are not included in the extra packs I ordered. But the guys a Gripping Beast will send me some spears and bases anyhow. NOW that's Service. But I think that they need to be a bit more cleare about the fakt that the packs do not contain spears and swords.

And now for some scraping, sanding, washing and the primer. Ill be using the Army Painter Leather Brown primer for this project, and then work with INKS and washes to get a dark earty and Medieval look and feel of the minies. The shields will be the one thing with bright colors to make the minies POP on the table.

Boat Building Intermission

Having a unplanned pause in my boat building, having hur my Left hand in a minor car accident, well minor in the sense that no one was seriously hurt.But to the Car owners it was probably major due to the extensive damages to the cars involved.

Got a new sail from Corel the other day, and finally it was flawless, I was asked to resen the other sails for them to check them it sounds like they have some quality problems. But no shadow over Corel, they have been on their toes for me, answering quickly and sending me new sails without hesitation and questions. And some times shit happens, so...

I have been binding my time with some videos about boat building on Youtube, spent some time on the http://www.modelshipworld.com forum as well, there are some really educating and interesting. they do not be both interesting and educating but most of the are.

Mikado?

Glued the first pieces into place, not on the actual model and but on the keel bed, wonder if that's the correct term for it. 2 pieces of straight 6x6 mm squared pine wood, approx 300mm in lenght...

More problems with the model, the keel piece is crooked, the rudder piece is of piss poor wood and needs to be redone or exchanged.

Well I have sort of lost the edge of the Hobby, its just not as fun as it was, and work, and family and, you know stuff. I'm trying desperately to find my way back to the fun parts.

So I'm a bit side tracked, was thinking Bottle ships for some time but that wasn't me and building 1/35 scale models that's old and with my neighbour Mirko Bayerl, I'm sort of already on second place. And air planes is not relay my thing, so what to do. Painting minies is just not enough at the time, no worries I wont stop painting but I'm on a short brake from it.

So what then...
Model ships, I have ordered a wood ship Corel kit Sloup- Model # SM 43, its a bunch of sticks that I have to assembly in order to make it look some thing like this.

This will be fun.

Finally I can put the TYW project on the shelf, of course I can allways add more to the project but at the time I WILL NOT...

Its painted as a generic TYW army but was intended to be Dutch army from the beginning and the theme sort of stuck.

Missing 4 banners but otherwise the army is finally complete.

All based for FOG:R (DBX standard), but is more likely to be played with the "No quarters" rules.

Painting
The army is primed with Army painter Brown Leather, and painted with mostly Vallejo model range with a few exceptions, then the minies then are inked with Devlan Mud from Games Workshop, see the painting Tutorial form more details.

Minies are mostly Warlord and a washing few numbers of Renegade minies.

Got Dust Tactics today from Alphaspel.
First impression!
Nice models, nice set of rule books and scenario books, well packed and a bit higher details on the minies then expected.

Down side:
The box was miss backed, one of the Mechs had 2 right arms instead of 1 leftie and 1 rightie, not Alphaspels wrong doing and they are to contact the supplier to have it fixed hopefully to next week.

The models are delicate perhaps a bit to delicate, the plan was to repaint them and so will be done but not in the planed way, they need a lot more attention then I expected. And that in a way of not being poorly done, but to the point of being more detailed then expected. And therefor a bit more fragile then they needed to be...

Took the courage today to start clean out some old models, never to be finished projects, old sprues and other miscellaneous hobby related Junk just lying around in the Garage.

10 Panthers, 10 different destinies and 13 stories to tell them,,

I did choose not to read all 13 stories, I only read the foreword and 3 of the stories written by Mirko Bayerl, they where in my eyes the centerpiece in the book and the most well built model and diorama in the collection of models.

Mirko wrote 3 articles about the SS panther AJ9 which later was destroyed by its own crew due to lack of petrol and ammunition, so to prevent it from ending up in the hands of the Russians then blew it up.
The stories about the AJ9 also contains eyewitness reports from a man that was 13 at the time and on location photos, both historical and pictures taken by Mirko when he visited the locations.

And topped off in the last article with pictures and details about the diorama and the model. I my self has had the privilege to follow the progress and see the amount of work that Mirko put in to the diorama and to admire the result first hand.

The rest of the book contains some nice and detailed articles about 9 other Panthers in different versions and locations during the WWII, some fiction and some fact, like the AJ9.

Modelers and authors.

Mirko Bayerl, Roddy Macdougall, Phill Stutcinskas, Darren Gawle, Lester Plaskitt, Gunnar Jansson, Roger Hurkmans, Markus Eriksson, Brian Murdoch and Toni Canfora are the authors of 13 articles about 10 different Panthers, all presented with well written articles, detailed photos and some relay nice scale models and dioramas.

Warlord TYW...

Today, well yesterday if we are to be completely honest, I decide that the best place finaly make my TYW project 100% done was to bring it to the club. And therefor I did, and now all the minis for the TYW project is at the club.
I fixed all the bases for all the infantry, lock stock and barrel and all the infantry allso are coated with GW Purity seal and dusted with Valejo Dullcoat, its like magic,

Some playing was also done with Victory Without Quarters(VWQ), this is the second time we had tried this game and I think its here to stay.

Perfect for scenarios and smaller campaigns todays battle was a bit to big, the weakness is the way units are activated, by randomness, and therefor some units will be unactivated round after round. I had units that had not moved or fired , almost the length of the game, the rules for activation has to be looked in to.

Victory Without Quarters

Today We played as a complement to the more complex rules of FOG:R, the set of rules "Victory without quarter". It's written for ECW but we played it with the intention of TYW. The wars are not that far apart and therefor no problems but the ECW is e light version of TYW, with fewer unit types and lesser soldiers.

The rules are quick and easy to learn, but we had to make up some house rule to increase the flow of the game, for instance changed so that the combat values never can be lower then 1+ and higher then 6+.
And then we have to tweek some of the unit types to make the game more adapted to TYW and the unit types used then.

We are going to play this agin this weekend and I will give you a deeper runt trough of the game then, and perhaps an Arr as well.

Peter Pig writes on his webpage More Oink for the buck, and oh is he right, got some minies from PP last friday, the are now all cleaned, surpassingly little casting flesh, and mostly glued on sticks for painting, the general part of them are also primed and ready for painting.

Spent some hours on the mounted Samurai Yari models, fast and easy, sorry no pics yet, only when the are on their bases. Me being me, thinking in shortcuts, I was planing to leave all the rods, bows and shafts i the primed base color(Army painter, leather brown), this was until my friend Ogge pointed out that the where made of bamboo and often lackered, and often red. But since the whole army is red perhaps I should not paint the red put perhaps Yellow occra to make the look more like bamboo. And as usual He is right, and so it will be, yellow or bright red, they will not be left leather brown anyhow.

My son turning 9 decide that he wanted me to host a "painting party" for him and his class mates. Being a good, kind and fair father I said yes.

Remembered that I had some Fire Locks from Warlord, thanks Nils for reminding me, unused in a box, so now on Saturday the kids are painting Warlord Fire Locks.

My first cannon and crew, the minis and artillery piece are from Warlord yet again, 2 more cannons to go and then the rest of the stuff. The model will be coated again with Vallejo dull coat before its done, as of now its a tad bit to glossy.

Operation Squad test game - Written by Nils Idemalm

We tried out the fairly new skirmishrules ”Operation Squad” from Warlord this week. It was a very simple straightforward scenario with a squad of british paras who collided with a squad of germans somewhere in France june 6 1944.

As this was a first try at the rules we just put 7 paras on one side and 7 germans on the other side and went at it.

During the first turns both sides just advanced forward. As both sides started to get in range they traded shots for a while. The brits tried to move around the german left flank but as this is a game with ”the all seeing eye” covert outflanking is impossible…

In the end both sides took a few casaulties and retired. The germans lost 4 killed, the brits 2 killed and 2 wounded.

Figures are Bolt action british paras and Renegades WWI germans ( I forgot my Warlord WWII plastic germans at home so I had to improvise…)

So how did the rules work?

I thought they worked fine. They were interactive with both players involved at the same time. I liked they way they handled ”reactions”. If one figure wanted to to something others could react to this action. The mechanism to roll to see who reacted first was good. It gives an edge to welltrained soldiers but the dice element always gives a chance to everyone to win the reaction. I liked they way to roll a certain number of dice and either adding or reducing this number of dice depending on situation. Also the ”save” roll. This gives a better chance to succeed for welltrained troops but always gives a chance to less skilled soldiers to survive/hit its target.

The rules were fairly easy to understand and the level of detail was ok. I prefer simple games and this game was ok in that aspect.

We played with 7 figures per side, with a bit of experience you might be able to handle about 10-15 figures per side but above that I think the game becomes to unwieldly.

It needs markers to show the status of the figures. I generally dislikes markers on the terrain but here it is necessary to easily notice if a figure have already acted or its status.

There are no vehicle rules included which is fine by me. At this low level of skirmish vehicles would seriously unbalance the game I think. Maybe a halftrack or so but with tanks, not really good.

Same goes for artillery. One artillery strike and one side can easily be wiped out, does not provide a good game.

These rules, I think, are for very small level skirmishes, patrols clashing, securing a building or such missions. At this they are good enough.

What I miss is a bit of ”flavour” for the different units. A russian early war squad is just as efficient as a german squad when it comes to coordinating its movement and firing. I would have liked to have a few restrictions on how squads can move or fire for the different nationalities to provide for different gamingstyles. Now there are very few differences between playing US paratroopers, German ”Landsturm” or Russian soldiers.

What I would like (like every gamer on earth) would be some kind of ”hidden movement”. Don´t know really how yet though.

Now THIS is a hero...

Here's the part of the story that makes you cheer. He pulls out a kukri (i.e. a knife) and proceeds to kill 3 of them, injure 8 of them, and causes the rest to flee. During the battle, he suffered a severe knife injury to his left hand, from which he's now recovered.

Got some stuff from Perry today, in 5 small black boxes with an intriging content.
To bad I allready decided no to go with 28 mm minies for my FOG:R Shogun army, but rather 15mm. The thing is that how ever cool this project would be in 28mm, lets be realistic, the shipment I got from Perry miniatures was 37£ including PnP and I need at least 15 times the amount of minies and then some, do the math. And the fact is that I allready have a fair amount of 15 mm Japanes minies from that period is a key factor.

But anyhow, the minies great nice and I look forward to paint some of them, and YES I got some Ninjas as well.

A few years ago I read the nook, Pillars of the Earth, written by Ken Follett, a writer I associated with thrillers, and spy stories, not an Epic tale spanning the construction of a Cathedral.
Needless to say I loved the book and have read it a few times both in English and in Swedish. To my big satisfaction I recently discoverer that they have made a miniseries of the book.

Got hold of it a few days ago and pretty fast I screened all 8h of it, and it's a hit in my humble opinion. I loved it and i captured a the book in a relay great way, without changing the storyline or adding bits and pieces to fit the screenplay.

I´m selling 24 WWII germans from Warlords plasticbox.

24 Single bases figures in different poses and with different weapons. They are painted with Vallejo colors and painted to a very good standard. Bases have static grass, lichten, a few rocks and so on. They are protected by a coat of dull varnish. They will be very well packed to protect them in transit.

The faces are painted dark flesh and then washed with Ogryn flesh. After that a highligt with lighter flesh and a dash of red for the lower lip. Uniforms are Vallejos german field uniform with a wash of devlan mud. Then another coat of german field uniform with a bit of iraqi sand to lighten it. Gives a good effect of shading.

The figures are painted in a slightly impressionistic way. That means they look good from ordinary viewing distance, maybe 1 foot away, not from 1 inch viewing distance away.

The rest have helmets

The carry an assortment of weapons. 2 MG34:s, 2 MG42:s, rifles, Sturmgewehrs, MP40:s and G43:s and panzerfausts.

Got hold of some realy fine linnen sheets from the Kings own stock, its made or at least taken in to service before the Great War (WWI), and has probably been washed over 1000 times, they made stuff to last back then.
I realised that what would be better to make banners out of the a piece of linen sheet with a piece of history, some thing to honour the men and women in service all over the world fighting for peace today.

Well that sounded deep right.

A true sniper is an operative who gathers intelligence for the command structure (law enforcement or military) and occasionally takes the one, well-aimed shot that, if done properly, will save lives. However, if the shot missed or wasn't fatal, it is either resulting health insurance leads or increasing the threat from the respective party.

Simo Häyhä

Simo Häyhä (December 17, 1905 – April 1, 2002), nicknamed "White Death" by the Red Army, was a Finnish soldier. Using a standard iron-sighted, bolt action rifle in the Winter War, he has the highest recorded number of confirmed kills in any major war.

Häyhä was born in the municipality of Rautjärvi near the present-day border of Finland and Russia, and started his military service in 1925. Before entering combat, Häyhä was a farmer and a hunter. His farmhouse was reportedly full of trophies for marksmanship. It was during the Winter War (1939–1940), between Finland and the Soviet Union, that he began his duty as a sniper and fought for the Finnish Army against the Red Army. In temperatures between −20 and −40 degrees Celsius (−4 and −40 degrees Fahrenheit), dressed completely in white camouflage, Häyhä was credited with 505 confirmed kills of Soviet soldiers, and 542 if including the unconfirmed deaths. The unofficial Finnish frontline figure from the battlefield of Kollaa places the number of Häyhä's sniper kills over 800.

Ivan Sidorenko

Ivan Mikhaylovich Sidorenko (born September 12, 1919) is a former Red Army officer, who served during World War II. He was one of the top Soviet snipers in the war, with over five hundred confirmed kills.

Ranked a Major, he was the most successful Soviet sniper of the Second World War, and used the Russian Mosin-Nagant rifle, equipped with a telescopic sight. Sidorenko's feat was not unique, however: several other Soviet snipers scored nearly as many kills, and Simo Häyhä of Finland is credited with having 505 confirmed kills.

Billy Sing

William Edward Sing DCM (1886 - 19 May 1943) was an Australian soldier of World War I, and distinguished sniper during the Gallipoli Campaign.

On October 24, 1914, two months after the outbreak of war, Sing enlisted as a trooper in the Australian Fifth Light Horse Regiment of the Australian Imperial Force. Sing won international fame as a sniper during the Gallipoli campaign of 1915-1916. Serving as dismounted infantry in the Gallipoli campaign, Sing partnered with his spotter Ion Idriess (later author of "Desert Column", "Cattle King", "Lassetter's Last Ride"), and later Tom Sheehan. Regimental records list Sing as having taken 150 confirmed 'kills'. However, on October 23, 1915, General William Birdwood, commander of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, issued an order complimenting Sing for his 201 unconfirmed 'kills'.

Erwin Konig

Erwin König, aka Heinz Thorvald (died c. 1942), was a highly skilled Wehrmacht sniper allegedly killed by the legendary Red Army sniper Vasily Zaytsev during the Battle of Stalingrad. König is mentioned both in Zaytsev's memoirs Notes of a Sniper and William Craig's 1973 non-fiction book Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad. The 2001 movie Enemy at the Gates portrays a fictional account of the sniper duel between Zaytsev and König during the final days of the Battle of Stalingrad.

Vasily Zaytsev

Vasily Grigorevich Zaytsev was a Soviet sniper during World War II, notable particularly for his activities between November 10 and December 17, 1942 during the Battle of Stalingrad. He killed 225 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht and other Axis armies, including 11 enemy snipers.

He is notable for having participated in the Battle of Stalingrad. There, the Soviets set up a snipers' training school in the Metiz factory; it was run by Zaytsev. The snipers Zaytsev trained were nicknamed zaichata, meaning "leverets" (baby hares). Antony Beevor wrote in Stalingrad that this was the start of the "sniper movement" in the 62nd Army. Conferences were arranged to spread the doctrine of "sniperism" and exchange ideas on technique and principles that were not limited to marksmanship skills. It is estimated that the snipers Zaytsev trained killed more than 3000 enemy soldiers.

Henry Norwest

A former ranch-hand and rodeo performer, he served for a short time with the Northwest Mounted Police until September 1915 when he joined the Canadian army. In his nearly three years of service with the 50th Canadian Infantry Battalion, the lance-corporal achieved a documented sniping record of 115 fatal shots. While Norwest was an outstanding marksman, the thing that set him apart from others was his superb stealth tactics and his expertise in the use of camouflage. As a result of his exceptional abilities his superiors frequently sent him on reconnaissance missions into "No Man's Land" or behind enemy lines.

Carlos Norman Hathcock II

Carlos Norman Hathcock II (May 20, 1942 – February 23, 1999) was a United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant sniper with a service record of 93 confirmed kills. Hathcock's record and the extraordinary details of the missions he undertook made him a legend in the Marine Corps. His fame as a sniper and his dedication to long distance shooting led him to become a major developer of the United States Marine Corps Sniper training program. He has, in recent years, also had the honor of having a rifle named after him: a variant of the M21 dubbed the Springfield Armory M25 White Feather.

Hathcock said in a book written about his career as a sniper: "I like shooting, and I love hunting. But I never did enjoy killing anybody. It's my job. If I don't get those bastards, then they're gonna kill a lot of these kids we got dressed up like Marines. That's just the way I see it."

Lyudmila Pavlichenko

Just saw the movie Captain Alatriste about the War between Spain and Flandern a realy good movie with Viggo Mortensen. The main Plot is the EYW och the TYW it depends on how you want to see it.

Check out this clip from the film, this the only real battle scene in the movie, showing how a Spanish Tercio it fighting, but otherwise there are rely nice duals and fighting scenes to seen in the movie.

The film is based on a collection of novels by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

Warlord realy nice minies but I cant stand the multi part minies, liquid polly and arms hats and guns everywhere. Pikes nu problem and marching/advancing muskets so easy, but the shooting musketeers the are a bloody hell don't like them.

Hopes and dreams

Well now that the TYW project is more half way done its time to plan for the next.

I have always been interested in the Samurai Armies of the Shogun with Ashigaru Arquebusiers and pikes, hordes of samurai and Ashigaru warriors clashing together in a sea of steel, blood and dismembered bodies, great champions being beheaded and lesser champions being mutilated.

I have been looking at the Perry miniatures ranged and are looking for other manufacturers of 28 mm samurai ranges. Museum Miniatures have some nice ranges as well but there site sucks and the have movies of the minies instead of images, this making the site hard to navigate, and I thing their models are a bit early and more suitable for an early army more fitting the FOG:A rules and the book Emipire of the Dragon

Hi!

I have been getting some questions about how I paint my TYW minies, therefore I decide make a tutorial on how I do just that.

For this particular model a metal Battle standard bearer (BSB) from Renegade(I think) I used the following colors.

Skin, Valejo Model color, Dark Flesh, #70927
Hair, Valejo Model color, Yellow Tan, #70912
Jacket, GW Foundation, Macharius Solar Orange
Pants, Valejo Game color, Cold Grey
Mics, Valejo Model color, Black #70950, Gunmetal # 70863, Ivory # 70918, Buff #70976 and Azure #70902

Washing: GW Foundation, Devlan Mud

This mini being a BSB and there for being a bit more in the center then a usual rank and file model, I neede to add a bit of extra effort. there for the high numbers of colors.

Step 1.
The models was cleaned and washed, if it was a plastic model I wouldn't have bothered with the washing of the models, but now being a metal minies I had to. I then sorted them so that I have basicly the same pose on the models before mounting the on sticks and priming them.

In this case I used the Army Painter Brown Leather spray to prime the models, this to save time painting the model, allso the Army Painter Brown Leather is a perfekt match to the Valejo Model color, English Uniform #70921, this might come in handy if you are a bit sloppy.

Step 2.
Painting Skin, trying to leave the eye and mouth with no paint, and just bloging the hands and any outer skin showing.

Step 3
Painting the Jacket, well how hard can it be, just being sure not to get paint on the belts and stuff, you can also do a bit of outlining here if you please that, I do not, I just cant get it to look good.

Step 4

Painting the pants, again leaving any belts, buckles and things like that, just keep it clean, if you do get sloppy just correct it. As you can I have painted some details on the model, but that's only because its a BSB and not a regular rank and file model.

And now for the magic...

Devlan Mud, I'm planing to fix up my own blend but for now I use GW's smelly stuff, yes it relay smells bad.

Some highlighting if desired, I usual highlight the faces, this using the same color as before on the face, on the front rank models but the other ranks I do not bother. Just paint "STZ--", S on the left chin, T on the nose and forhead, Z on the right chin and - - on upper lip and cheek, fast and easy.

The big time savers.

I didn't highlight any areas except for the face and hands.

I didn't put any time/effort into painting belts, straps or pouches, this is a big time saver, this works because of the primer being leather brown.

Well the army looks great from a distance of 1 - 1½ meters, with some nice bases and some cool banners the army will be an eye catcher and if you don allow your opponent to get to close you might just get away with it.

Time spent on painting the model without drying time is approx 2½ minutes. And if you do like I do painting the in batches of 6 then you can get don to lets say 2 minutes per model, that's 30 an hour.
